Mother's Day: The Middle

Imagine the perfect Mother's Day. Does it involve getting woken up at 6:30 in the morning to running eggs and burnt freezer waffles? Well that is how Frankie's Mother's Day started on this episode of The Middle.

Oh and my favorite part is when Mike announces that he is going to go watch Sport Center and let Frankie hang out with the kids because it is her day after all.

The Middle Season 1 Episode 22 "Mother's Day"

Frankie doesn't get the best Mother's Day. She get woken up early to a bad breakfast and bad gifts. She really didn't want an inflatable foot massager.

When Frankie's mom, Pat, cancels dinner plans, Frankie and Sue drive out to see her. During the drive Sue admits to stealing a refrigerator magnet. The guilt has gotten to her and they have to pull over do Sue can throw up on the side of the run. Another great element in a Mother's Day celebration.

Once the mother and daughter arrive at their destination, they learn that Pat just wanted a day to herself alone. Frankie, Pat and Sue all end up in tears.

When Pat and Sue return home, the house is trashed, and Mike forgot to buy Frankie the slice peach pie that she wanted. The next day Frankie goes and buys herself a slice of peach pie to enjoy in peace all by herself.

A great Mother's Day special from start to finish.

The Royal Wedding: The Office Wedding

I'm not sure which one was more anticipated Jim and Pam getting married or William and Kate. I'm pretty sure people wouldn't get up at 4 am to watch Jim and Pam get married.

Happy Royal Wedding Everybody.

Administrative Professionals Day: Ugly Betty

Who knew that Administrative Professionals day would have so many television clips? Personally, I think it is great. I love whenever television includes holidays in the plot of their show. (And why I created this blog).

From this episode of Ugly Betty, we learn to get to the store early or their won't be any "Happy Secretary Day" stuff left and don't forget the receptionist.

Ugly Betty Season 1 Episode 23 "Secretaries' Day"

Administrative Professionals Day: Just Shoot Me

"Hey, if it makes them feel like more than an answering machine for one day a year, let them dream."

As a former administrative assistant, I was much more than an answering machine. But maybe just that was because the bosses had voice mail box. Man, do I love voice mail!

Just Shoot Me Season 1 Episode 3 "Secretary's Day"

Some people love Secretary's Day, but Finch hates it. It just reminds him that everyone just thinks of him as just a secretary. So when he falls into the gorilla cage at the zoo and he is presented with instant fame, he loves it. He becomes know as "The Gorilla Man of New York"

Jay Leno makes a guest appearance.

The rest of the episode is available on youtube.

Mother's Day: Half & Half

Mother daughter weekends are a great way to spend Mother's Day especially if they are at a spa. But it might just be too much time together.

Half sisters, Mona and Dee Dee, end up at the same spa with their mothers. Dee Dee wants to talk about her relationship with her boyfriend but her mom doesn't want to talk about sex. The rest of the episode is available on youtube.

Mother's Day: Everybody Hates Chris

What do you do when you have found that perfect gift for your mother only to discover you can't afford it?  Do you steal it? No. That would be wrong. You just buy the knock-off. Problem solved.

Everybody Hates Chris Season 3 Episode 21

Chris goes to the department store to my Rochelle some perfume for Mother's Day. But apparently he wasn't fast enough and the only thing left is way too expensive. To fix the problem, Chris buys a knock-off from Risky. Everything would have been fine if Rochelle hadn't broken out in hives after using the knock-off. And of course things only get worse when Rochelle takes Chris back to the department store thinking that is where he bought it.

Mother's Day: In the Motherhood

This short-lived, mid-season entry show still had time to do a Mother's Day webisode.

These young mom's love to share their worst Mother's Day moments. And their worse potty training moments. Would you be happy or embarrassed that your child pooped in the potty for the first time but it was in a display toilet at the hardware store? Would you tell someone or just walk away?

In The Motherhood, Season 1 "Mother's Day"

Mother's Day: The Jetsons

The Jetsons, Season 2 Episode 12 "Mother's Day for Rosie" This Mother's Day don't forget your robot maid. She might get her feelings hurt.

Mother's Day in Orbit City just makes Rosie miss her mother. The robot model before Rosie has been deactivated. But George wants to find the blueprints so Rosie can have her mother back. Wouldn't be nice for all of us that have lost a mother to be able to build a replacement.

Mother's Day: Real moms and fake moms

From the wisdom of Tracy Jordan: "No Jenna, no one gets to choose their mom, even when they're fake."

Season 4, Episode 20, The Moms

30 Rock managed a gut-busting mother's day episode back in 2010. It worked in all the usual 30 Rock drama as Jack and his mother Colleen fight over the morality of dating two women, Liz fantasizes over the prospects of having Buzz Aldrin for a dad (in a fantasy where somehow she is a man) and the TGS Show tries to idiotically bring everyone's mother on air for a Mother's Day episode.

So say "Happy Mother's Day" to your mom on May 8, and remember how complicated (and wonderful) she makes your life, "even if they're fake."

Why does TV hate Easter?

For at least a month yearly TV blasts one thing into our heads: Christmas, Christmas, Christmas. Sit-coms and dramas alike go to extreme lengths to play up the holiday cheer. Major networks cut out special prime-time hours to play perennial Christmas specials that are so old my parents my parents can't remember when they first aired.

But when the most important Christian Holiday rolls around in early spring there’s barely a mention of Easter, except maybe the occasional reference to a creepy guy at the mall in a bunny suit. After frantically searching for Easter-related episodes for weeks on our seasonally-themed TV blog, HolidaySPECIAL, the offerings were paltry.

There were only a few. In 21 years on the air, The Simpsons mentions Easter on two occasions that I can find. The first is in the season 10’s Simpsons Bible Stories episode, when the family is sleeping through a particularly boring Easter sermon (In fact the only hint we have here that its an Easter sermon is that Homer put a chocolate rabbit on the offering plate). Then in Season 20 the show’s opening season tackles an Easter egg hunt, ending with Homer taking revenge on a rabbit-dressed man. This is about as good as it gets for Easter, even from the Simpsons, which last year devoted an entire episode the country of Israel.

This year I couldn’t find a single Easter-themed show airing during the weeks leading up to Easter. Only the traditional "Ten Commandments" film, which has nothing to do with Easter, is airing on ABC the day before the holiday.

Earth Day: Everybody Hates Chris

Earth day can't be that important if I don't get the day off, I still have to feed the parking meters, and banks aren't closed. At least that is what Chris' dad thinks.  Maybe everyone should get the day off. I think that would at least get people more excited about Earth day.

Everybody Hates Chris: Season 3 Episode 18 "Everybody Hates Earth Day"

The kids have to come up with Earth Day projects for school. Chris decides to collect cans thinking that it will be easy and that he can get Julius to help him.

Rochelle has to go down to the school when Tonya misbehaves.

Earth Day: The Simpsons

Earth Day: The one day a year when we tell the earth, "We'll be cool if you'll be cool" Oh,and we wear special t-shirts and put in a twirly light bulb.

Here is Homer Simpson to tell us all about it.

The Simpsons Season 21, Episode 19 "The Squirt and the Whale"

Earth Day: The Daily Show with Jon Stewart

Today is Earth Day. "It's like Christmas for the Earth." So what present are we going to give the Earth this year? I don't know but according to Lewis Black's "Back in Black" segment, it is all about the kids. And how do we reach the kids? "Elmo, he's like Glen Beck for kids"

Earth Day: In Living Color

New Baby: The Office

My sister, Lisa and her husband Jeff had their 4th child yesterday. A little baby girl. Both baby and mother are doing well. And I just wanted to congratulate them by posting a great baby clip.

Because of course whenever there is an important time in our life, we turn to television for advice. And who better than Michael Scott and the whole Office crew.

So here is an excerpt from when Jim and Pam had their baby.

The Office Season 6 Episode 17 "The Delivery"

The birth of Jim and Pam's baby was so epic that it needed two episodes.

Pan starts having contractions but is determined to wait to the last minute to go to the hospital so that she can have more recovery time at the hospital after the baby is born. Of course Jim wants her to go as soon as possible. The rest of the office tries to distract Pam from the pain with food and entertainment.

Andy gets jealous when Erin has lunch with Kevin and finally asks her out.

And a contract between Angela and Dwight to have a baby is signed. But Dwight has seconds thought after seeing Isabel at Jim and Pam's house.

Easter: The Dick Van Dyke Show

Rob has to choose between going to Washington for work or seeing his son be the main bunny in the school program. With pressure from his wife and his boss, he ends up having one crazy dream.

And I have to ask one thing. Why is it called "The Dick Van Dyke Show" when his character's name is Rob Petrie? I mean when Rosanne Barr got her own show called "Roseanne," her character's name was also "Roseanne."

Rob's boss tells him not to be a puppet and go to Washington to see an up and coming singer. But his wife Laura tells him not to let their son Richie down by missing him be the main bunny in the school program. Rob feels like he just can't win. He ends up telling his side of the story to the guy in the next seat on the airplane on the way back from Washington.

Easter: Homer Takes on the Easter Bunny

The Simpsons are always great for a holiday special. And this Season 17 episode is no exception.

Here's Ralph collecting Easter Eggs. Too bad he has a whole in the bottom of the basket. If you search on youtube, you can watch him do it for 10 minutes straight.

And if you want to watch Homer beat up the Easter Bunny, here it is on milkandcookies.com. "Silly Rabbit, kicks are for ribs." You also get a great look into the mayor's office.

The Simpsons Season 17 Episode 7 "The Last of the Red Hot Mamas"

This is another episode where Marge tries to make new friends in high society. But this time she is not wearing the same pink Chanel suit over and over again. But she does discover that they are thieves planning a heist.

And Lisa turns to Milhouse when she wants help learning Italian.

Easter: "Why does the easter bunny hide eggs mommy?"

Here's an oldie from the comic-turned-into-television genre -- A Family Circus Easter from 1982. The A Family Circus gang takes on the egg and candy holiday with their usual G-rated humor. There's even singing!

A Family Circus Easter Easter, 1982

You'll probably have to look for this one on tape at the old video store. Billy, Dolly and Jeffy try to outsmart and catch the Easter Bunny by hiding their eggs in a trap. How innocent.

Just like other comic-to-tv adaptions, A Family Circus Easter is full of short gags that seem to fall flat when put into full action (See also every Peanuts special).

For that matter, I never quite understood A Family Circus at all. It's like Peanuts without the wit. "Oh look, there's a bowl of spaghetti on the baby's head -- again!"

Tax Day: Do you know what a write off is?

With today being tax day, and tons of people rushing to get their taxes done (thankfully, I am not one of them), it is important to get the jargon down. Here is Seinfeld to help us with the phrase "write off."

Seinfeld Season 8 episode 5 "The Package"

George want to impress the woman that works at the photo store and he has discovered that she looks at everyone pictures. So Kramer takes seductive pictures of George.

Elaine shows a little attitude with her doctor and worries about the comments in her medical record. So she tries to get a look at them.

And Jerry refuses delivery of a package with no return address. This is where we learn about "write offs."

Tax Day: My Name is Earl

Would you go back and pay your taxes?

With today being April 15, the hated Tax Day, it is something to think about. And in case you are wondering what Earl would do, he would at least try.

My Name is Earl, Season 1 Episode 17 "Didn't Pay Taxes"

Earl got away with not paying his taxes for years but now that he is working with karma, he wants to pay his back taxes. It isn't until Randy finds an uncashed paycheck that Earl realizes he had been cheating the government out of this taxes. So he adds it to his list.

When Earl tries to pay his back taxes, no one wants to take his money. After the IRS office turns him away, he puts the money into the suggestion box. But they just mail it back to Earl.

Earl is more determined than ever. He tries to fix a pothole but a police office stops him because potholes have to be filled by an "authorized government worker." Then he joins a prison work team, but ends up in solitary confinement.

Now Earl is just desperate. He decides to break the law in a effort to get fined so he can pay the government. But he just ends up trapped in the water tower. When he finally gets rescued, he gets fined the $500 that he has been trying to pay the government and therefore can cross "Didn't pay taxes" off his list.

For those of you with Netflix, you can watch the whole episode on instant view. Or tbs.com has longer clips.

Tax Day - The Old Shoebox of Reciepts

Oh remember the days when doing your taxes was long forms and tons of receipts? Well I only remember watching my parents do that. Computer taxes all the way, baby!

Season 2, Episode 22: "April Fool's Day"

Don't let the title fool you, this episode is all about taxes. Like many people of their era (who didn't receive generous returns due to perpetual tax lowering), Dan and Roseanne are panicking about filing their taxes before midnight on April 15.

“Stupid system run by stupid people, thought up by stupid people, hired by stupid people.” “Who are elected by even stupider people.” - Classic

Watch part 2 here:

I miss Roseanne now and other vanguard shows like Married with Children and early Simpsons.

Easter: Super Chicken vs. Easter Bunny

I was always a little suspicious of the Easter Bunny. We let him into our homes to have free access to all of our goods. No wonder I couldn't find my watch after last spring.

From one of the recurring shows on George of the June, Super Chicken spoofs Easter with a villainous take on our favorite spring icon.

George of the Jungle, 1967, Episode 7: "The Easter Bunny"

An old favorite, Super Chicken was a part of the George of the Jungle Show on CBS. Super Chicken was a comedic fowl given super skills by his "super sauce.

The clip turns Easter on its ear by lampooning our trust in characters like the Easter Bunny. When the Easter Bunny begins robbing banks (and "no one dared stop the Easter Bunny") its Super Chicken to the rescue.

Tax Day: Doing Taxes for the Stars!

Easter: Will it ever get here?

Getting tired of waiting around for Easter this year? Ready for chocolate bunnies and Cadbury eggs? This is one of the latest possible dates for Easter, so I say stop waiting and start celebrating. All the best Easter treats are already in the store and the best that television has to offer on the subject will be on this blog leading up to the big day.

To start us off is Ugly Betty. We always expect crazy outfits from Betty but this time it is her boss getting into the holiday spirit.

Easter: A little spring Peanuts Humor

A holiday isn't officially here until the Peanut's specials start airing on TV.

It's the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown, April 9, 1974

Click on image for video from YouTube.com

Charlie Schultz and the Peanuts seem to help ease us into any holiday with warm, family-friendly (and slightly depressing style).

Like most Peanut's Specials, "It's the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown" cobbles together several classic comic strips, combined with an over-arching theme. This time its the Easter Beagle, a classic copy of the Great Pumpkin from 1966.

These guys are still spooked 8 years later.

If I can figure out when this gets on TV, I'll post the time, channel and date.

April Fools Day: The Office Prank Countdown #1

Wouldn't you just love to pull this prank off? Imagine putting all your coworker's stuff in the vending machine.

With the help of the vending machine guy, Jim puts all of the items from Dwight's desk, including his bobble head doll and his wallet, into the vending machine.

The Office Season 2 Episode 11 "Booze Cruise"

It's the annual motivational cruise! Michael ticks off the caption. Roy gets drunk and announces a wedding date that Pam knows nothing about. And of course, Jim realizes he still in love with Pam. It is amazing what can happen when you are stuck on a boat with your coworkers.

Happy April Fools Day!

Happy April Fools Day Everybody!

We have posted so many great April Fools clips from our favorite shows. It would be a shame if you missed any of them. So here is just a little reminder of our "April Fools Day" tab. Just click on it and you get links to all our April Fools posts. And who knows it might just inspire some last minute pranks. Happy Fooling!

Here is a post that most of you probably missed. We originally posted it on March 19th. But it seems right to post Origins of April Fools Day on April Fools Day especially when it includes some great Homer and Bart Simpson pranks.

Enjoy!

As far as holidays go, April Fools' gets the shaft in the holiday hierarchy. But what other day gives you permission to humiliate your boss, teacher or spouse? So are The Simpsons pulling our chains with their pagan origins story? Even back in season 4, I wouldn't put it past Matt Groening and company.

Season 4, episode 18 - So It's Come to This: A Simpsons Clip Show

Classic April Fools material. The show actually aired on April 1, 1993, but its still a classic today. Isn't it great how Homer and Bart haven't seemed to grasp what's "over the line?" The gag culminates in Bart pulling the ultimate prank, shaking a beer can in a paint mixing machine. The subsequent beer explosion ("We need pretzels, repeat pretzels") puts Homer in the hospital and kicks off a clip show as the family reminisces.
